Couple’s Portrait
My sister-in-law asked me for a comic style portrait of her and my brother, which I was happy to attempt… well, it maxed out my skills, so I should be happy with the result. Hehe. In retrospect I think I tried TOO hard! I should have been looser about it. They both look happy, and that’s what’s most important. Any further comment I can make is just me telling my brain to shut up already. Shut shut up it’s fine shut up.
You really should tell your inner critic to shut up because it’s a really nice drawing. Seriously not everyone can draw. I still make stick figures and never give anyone a neck.

Thank you! I tell it to shut up all the time but I fed it so well when I was little that it’s a bit overgrown today and takes a lot of wrestling to hold that sunuvabitch down!

I can understand that it’s hard to feel awesome when you are used to the bad feelings. I try to say good things to me and encourage myself and a lot of the times I feel like a fraud for doing so but I keep doing it. I used to play You got it by Family Force 5 all the time let myself believe I was awesome like that. I’m still no where near those people who haven’t struggled but I’m not in the dark hole anymore either. Hopefully you will learn to see your awesomeness one day because I assure you it’s there.

I appreciate your kindness. I’ve dug myself out of quite a hole already, but for some reason all the self-confidence issues tend to come slime-ing back when I draw. I guess we’re both works in progress 😀 WE GOT IT though!

Okay that’s damn cool. Totally framable or even better, laminatable-on-phone-case

Thank you so much! ^_^
Whoa, that’s an ultramodern standard to hold something to. Maybe a higher compliment than framing, because you’d be looking at it every day!

Damn, you are talented. How much do you charge for a portrait?

I’ve never been commissioned a portrait before! Except for the one I posted, heh, but I gave that as a Christmas present. I guess it would depend on how much time and detail this hypothetical person wanted me to put into it… 😉 Maybe $10/hr? You can hit “contact me” and email if you’re actually interested and we can figure it out.

Sarah, I totally agree with you that the key, the crucial, thing is communicate whatever you want to communicate — in this case the couple’s happiness. To me, your piece communicates their happiness so well that I honestly doubt anyone could miss it, or misinterpret it, unless they were trying to do so, We all have doubts about our art — we’re so close to it during its creation that we see every pore, every blemish. But what you have achieved here is a powerful statement about a couple’s happiness.
I love how you are accomplished in both the visual arts of drawing and painting, and in the literary arts of poetry and story-telling. You’d be a blast to have as a neighbor. The conversations!

Yay, thank you!
Hah, my neighbors barely know me. My bloggers know me way better! Funny how that works…

Your neiighbor’s stay away? It’s probably got something to do with the horrifying screams now and then coming from your basement.
Three years ago, I had a wonderful neighbor. She pretended to be a bitch, but she would encourage and cheer me on when I showed her my art. We’d have usually short, but fascinating talks when she would come out on her porch to smoke. She got cancer but died so bravely I now hope to die like her — cracking jokes it about, refusing any sorrow. Miss the “bitch” these days.
The current neighbor won’t even speak to me. Refused from the start. Not even willing to give it a try.
I spend my days now praying there’s a serial killing in the neighborhood who has taken a professional interest in her future.

Sounds like you’ve been really lucky in your neighbors, LOL. If that’s the standard then, yes, I’m a great neighbor! Except for the screaming (of course). But I’m pretty careful, screams only get out once in a very great while.

I could pop by and entice your stuck-up neighbor to my basement for a visit if you like

My heart thinks it’s just heard the best dance music in all the world.
I’m working on a poem today inspired by my former next door neighbor. The good neighbor. The facts are largely fibs, except for the key ones, the important ones. And so far, the poem is capturing her spirit as accurately as a camera can capture appearances. I’m optimistic. But it makes me really miss all the more.
