Barriers

She was drunk, struggling to articulate

Lengthy pauses before each sentence

Halting, frustrated speech.

I’ve seen this before

She fights to be conscious, despite the sleeping pill

Her mind heavy

Her body stubborn

Her tongue a lead weight.

I’ve seen this before

She is deep in the throes of neurological degeneration

Lips uncooperative

Forcing thoughts through the thick walls

Of her solid-shrunk brain.

All of them demanding to be heard,

To be understood

Willing their selves past mental barriers

Deliberately balancing simple words

Like a child stacks blocks

With their fullest effort.

Who invited the TV

The TV is always chattering chattering away like a deaf old relative with no sense of when to stop clueless of your nonverbal cues that you want to leave it tells you story after story pausing partway through each one to turn into a door to door salesman interrupting itself with its own rambly advertisements buy this buy that lies lies lies and then it’s finally back to the story you want to know but just when it gets interesting and you start to really focus on things, it grabs your attention, it’s interesting, it’s fascinating! it’s a cliffhanger the story cuts off abruptly and it’s back to ads ads ads ADD ADD

Twin Talk

Yesterday was an eventful day.

His twin hadn’t been there to see it.

He sits on the front step for two hours

Talking to him on the phone.

They sift through the events

Passing the details back

And forth

Until both find common ground

Until each knows

Exactly as much

As the other knows.
