everything in miniature

i am nature blown small
the wind blows
i sigh
the trees bend
i lean
the earth quakes
i crack

channeled throughout with warm waters
tributaries of blood
ebb and flow in pulsing tide

on the spinning earth
my toes dig for purchase
running the surface

we lonely seek where we belong
how can we be alone
belonging anywhere we seek?

To be tiny

To be tiny
Climb a blackberry bush
Step between the large dull thorns
Wave to a passing ant
Ascend the most vibrant cluster of flowers
Swallowed by a profusion of white
Wrap yourself in a petal of living silk.

To be small
Climb a tree
Admire the neighborhood
Wave to a passing plane
Feel the branches bend beneath your weight
Wrap your hands around the sun-warmed wood.

To be insignificant
Climb the surface of a little blue planet
Breathe the miracle of air
Wave to a passing meteor
Wrapped in the inexorable present
Know that your meager vision
Only goes as far
As the neighborhood stars.

Fractals

The smallest story
Glimpses the universe.
Life gets infinitely smaller
No matter how close you look at it.
Little arcs and blotches,
Tendrils and curlicues.
Every raindrop falls with purpose
Lands with a splat
Leaving a hundred tiny specks
Microscosms of itself.
