Bits and Pieces 3

Little bits and pieces of poems which didn’t make the cut for one reason or another, but which I like too much not to post.

I need sleep.
I need a run.
I need food.
I need happiness
I need a bucket of water
To wet down this
Paper construction life.

Touch me green
Get your fucking hands off of me.
Touch me black
You stay three feet back.
Touch me red
I will wring your neck.
Touch me purple
Leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Touch me yellow
It’s almost right but not quite.
Touch me blue
You. You. You.

Whirling florating colors
A hickory tree
Something sustainable
A light wind
And in blows kudzu
Invasive, edible
Too much for us
We prefer beef
So we watch our roadsides die.

Kiss me kindly
Delicately
Like marzipan
Like frangipani
Like gelato
I want to taste
Your magic motion
I want to feel
The things you think
I want to smell
Your expressions.
What scent are you expressing now?
Yes.
Express it in my direction.
Please.

Cold cream
Ice cream
Wet milk
Butter.
Cheese
All the cheese
As many strains of cheese
As there are molds
As many molds
As there are humans to eat them.
Cheese.

We can’t play
On the old tire swing anymore.
Somebody’s fat ass broke it.
We can’t sing
The old songs anymore
They’re no longer allowed.
This is what it is to grow up.

Upstarts

A careless hand
Tossed seed hulls out the window.
Soon
A sunflower grew there
Piercing the well groomed lawn
Loomed over by bureaucratic bricks
Yet always facing the sunshine.
A little bit of wildness
A flash of bright orange
Had forced its way through.

In the name of homogeneity,
Somebody mowed it down.

Now a squash is growing along the standard landscaping wall.
Curling neon green tendrils,
A line of coral blossoms
In bright flagrancy.

Haibun – Winter Maneuver

Winter  attempts an advance against fall. To one side of the road, a cold snowscape of white-laced grass, two-tone evergreens, ancient gnarled branches softly pillowed with marshmallow, a study in black and white. To the other, fresh grass scattered with the discards of the glowy orange maple, the radiant yellow fingers of the gumball tree, the startling neon red of the burning bushes. Winter is gaining ground against the bounteous color, blotting out the many-hued lawns with pure white primer, heaping icing on the trees’ heads. The trees, still warm and flexible, shake the wet snow from their glorious manes, spattering sidewalk and pedestrian alike with gobs of slush. Dripping sounds off from all sides, in full stereo. Splat. Splat-splat. It was not the sky, but the trees which rained.

Ever she dances

Nature’s unconscious graces

Embrace all conflict

The Fall

When Fall passes by

It brushes some trees on top

Some the bottom

Some the side.

Wherever a leaf has been touched

It quickly spreads.

The torch of Fall

Kindles all.

They go graceful, as nature wills

They go with fire, one last glory

Immolating the world.

There is beauty in destruction

And the trees glow with it.

Filtering sunfire

Into their own shade

Coloring the sidewalks

Rose

Lemon

Baby green

Port.

With a farewell kiss

So light

Too soft for all senses

But sight.

Colors

This one was fun to write.

Purple

Vigor of violets

Color of rumpled tumble

A floral nectar

Indigo days

Creativity

A little sad but a lot of fun

Close your eyes and it lingers still

Smell the purple

Taste the purple

Fall backwards into a field

Of purple

Red

Gold flowing molten

Red weave of amber sunshine

Angular

Spicy

A piece of brittle shard

Cut of blood

Mane of light

Flaming

Blue

Wide open

Unending

Clear and nothing

Space

Space

A peaceful breeze

The round scent of ozone

Let your muscles uncurl

Sweet blue

Orange

Orange loves you

But orange is poison

Glares on the eyes

Beckons

Demands attention

Explosion

Venom

Construction

But also laces

the delicate wings of butterflies

Orange defends

Protects

Attacks

Green

Vivid life

Everything

Weighty with moisture

A bug

A hundred billion bugs

One leaf

Ten quadrillion fragrant green leaves

The balming scent of cut grass

The shade of bounty

Yellow

Joy

Pure unrefined joy

A trickle of urine

A trickle of light

Lemon meringue pie

A picnic on a bright day

A ten kilowatt smile

Warmth

Gummy bears

White

They say white is purity

White is also crisp

Anemic

Orderly

Functional

Clean

Like bleach

Cruel

Like bleach

Uncompromising

Amoral

Focused yet empty

Black

Black is the night

Lit by fireflies

Lit by stars

Filled with lovemaking

Black is chilly

But quiet

She keeps your secrets

The things you committed in white

Black is kind

With resting bitchface
