Weather monsters
I think there are giants outside
Trees with frozen fingers drag their unfeeling claws over my roof
Something clatters, rattles bangs.
The freezing rain has brought them.
Weather carries monsters in its wake.
When humans stay fearfully inside their homes,
Creatures of fancy cavort in the open air.

Giants? Monsters? Ah, you’re just being silly, Sarah, your imagination is running wild. Now, on the other hand, about two years ago, I was sitting at my computer around three in the morning when I heard a huge thump on my roof.
A few minutes later, another. Obviously a cougar, obviously hungry, and obviously I was quite surprised to discover the next morning that it had snowed heavily the night before and that the thumps were snow falling off branches.
But at least it could have been a cougar. And it was quite reasonable therefore for me to spend the night under my bed. Quite reasonable, and I’m glad I did.
But monsters? Giants? Simply silly.

Cougars are a real and very present threat. Don’t let them surround your house ever again!
Sure, you think the giants are imaginary, until you walk outside firm in your disbelief, and suddenly find yourself squashed.

I don’t believe I said they weren’t real. What I meant is that you used great imagery in describing them. In my neck of the woods, the wind monsters will be coming soon who will use baseball-sized pellets of ice to pummel us!

It’s OK because I’m a spoilt first-worlder with central heating. Bad weather days on the outside are coziest days on the inside 🙂

I make my too-old friends play pretend with me sometimes. On one of our recent runs, Hannah and I had to flee from the Winter Zombies from Game of Thrones, and I think a pack of wolves ate one of the cyclists behind us… it was intense!
